New Phoenix recruit Nathan Sobey has heaped the highest praise on rising star Owen Foxwell, saying he is the player he’s looking forward to teaming up with most.

One of just 12 players in the history of Australian basketball with an Olympic medal – Sobey was impressed by Foxwell at a recent Australian Boomers camp.

“I love what he’s about, he’s tough,” Sobey told Phoenix Media.

“Foxy came and trained with us during the last Boomers window, he gets after it on the defensive end.

“I actually can’t wait to play with him.”

Sobey’s comments echoed the sentiments of coaching guru and new Sydney Kings boss Brian Goorjian who had earmarked Foxwell for Boomers selection a long way out.

“Foxwell is a real talent, I look at him and think there’s tremendous talent there,” Goorjian said ahead of NBL24.

The 20-year-old enjoyed rapid rise at the Phoenix last season, often called upon in clutch situations and getting minutes in 24 of a possible 28 games, posting double-digit scores in five of those outings.

Now a leader at Eltham in the NBL1 South competition and on the precipice of a breakout year, Phoenix fans can expect an even sharper rise from the South East Melbourne local in NBL25.
