More than 2000 fans packed into the State Basketball Centre to see the new-look Phoenix take on the California Baptist University, shattering their previous record for a pre-season game.
The 87-62 win over the US Division 1 college was a glimpse of Mike Kelly’s new roster, and coaching staff, with the stadium at near full-capacity.
California Baptist University head coach Rick Croy was blown away with the fans, this his third attempt against an NBL side after losses to both Brisbane and Melbourne United.
“Best environment we’ve experienced, unbelievable environment,” Croy told Phoenix Media.
“It’s great to be here on the family day as well, so many fans young and old, there’s not many US teams experiencing this in August, so we’re lucky.”
(CBU head coach, Rick Croy, was impressed with the atmosphere of the game with the crowd.)
Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer thanked fans for their support as the NBL24 pre-season campaign begins.
“Seeing the stadium decked out in green and black was a real treat, the energy was incredible,” Greer said.
“Our fans always turn out, and it’s testament to both their passion, and the basketball product we produce on and off the court.”
The win was a complete showing by Phoenix, a dominant display without captain Mitch Creek, Reuben Te Rangi on Tall Blacks duties, recruits Craig Moller and Matt Kenyon or new import Will Cummings.
(Fans waiting to meet the players and coaches in the signing session post-game.)
South East Melbourne will host their first home game on Sunday, October 1 against Perth Wildcats at John Cain Arena.
