The Heartland Crew are the Phoenix’s superstar team of volunteers who help put on one of the best shows in town!
On one day, you could be helping facilitate the incredible pre-game show, and then the next be on-court as one of the floor wipers.
There is a role for everyone and it’s a great way to socialise, make lifelong friends and be part of a team.
Some of our Heartland Crew have even gone on to full-time employment with the South East Melbourne Phoenix!

Volunteer Story - Adam Courouzos
Adam Courouzos turned volunteering with the South East Melbourne Phoenix into a full-time job.
After starting with the Heartland Crew in 2019, Adam quickly made an impression on the team with his enthusiasm and passion for the work.
It wasn't long before Adam was approached to join the Phoenix Commercial team to work as a Membership Consumer Assistant.
On his journey, Adam remembers all of the different areas he experienced when with the Heartland Crew and how it helped him to the position he's in today.
"I worked with the on-court presentation team, in the corporate functions and basically everywhere else on a Phoenix game day," Courouzos said.
"I began to form relationships with the people I'd assist on game day and one thing led to another and was offered a job."
Adam wants to pay it forward to the volunteers he works with now, and can't recommend highly enough starting with the Heartland Crew.
"Anyone interested in sports and events, the variety of roles are endless and it's rare that you get to learn on the job with a professional sporting club."
"I hope to give current volunteers the same opportunities I was given, I could go on about how awesome the Crew is, but it's better to experience it for yourself."
Volunteer of the Year Award
Every season the Phoenix award their "Volunteer of the Year" award to the volunteer that most exemplifies the Phoenix values.
The Phoenix Community team choose the winner based on:
- Fulfilled their role with passion, professionalism, and enthusiasm.
- Demonstrated initiative and reliability as an individual and as a part of a team.
- Championing the cause of the Phoenix, capturing the sense of community and inclusion of others in their behaviours and actions.
- Evidence of leadership by working towards the greatness in self and others
- Always striving to excel above and beyond their expected voluntary role
