This National Volunteer Week, we are celebrating the amazing group of Heartland Crew members that help bring our game days to life at the Phoenix.
Every season the Phoenix award their 'Volunteer of the Year' award to the volunteer that most exemplifies the Phoenix values. The Phoenix Operations team chooses the winner based on their passion, professionalism, enthusiasm, initiative, reliability, leadership, commitment to community and inclusion, and their ability to consistently go above and beyond in their voluntary role.
The NBL26 recipient which was announced at the Phoenix's inaugural MVP Awards night was Tracey Helman, who has volunteered at the Phoenix for four seasons so far.

We spoke to Tracey on what it means to volunteer at the Phoenix and also winning the award.
Q: What first made you want to volunteer with the Phoenix?
A: My friend posted on her Instagram, sent her a message and next day I was involved.
Q: What has kept you coming back to be part of Heartland Crew?
A: The people, the organisation, the family feeling.
Q: You were recognised as our Heartland Crew Volunteer of the Year. What did that recognition mean to you?
A: I’m deeply proud and honoured, I love telling anyone that will listen. I am incredibly grateful to the Phoenix team for the recognition. It feels wonderful to know that my contributions are valued, and this acknowledgment inspires me to keep coming back.
Q: What are you most proud of from your time volunteering with the Phoenix?
A: Just being involved in such a great team.
Q: What roles or moments on game day have you enjoyed being part of most?
A: The Open-Roof Christmas event. I was up on the roof dropping down the gifts to everyone.
Q: What has been your favourite memory or highlight from your time with the Crew?
A: Getting the opportunity to be involved in the NBL/NBA game. I would have never got this opportunity if it wasn’t for Phoenix. Also, Pat (another Heartland Crew member) nearly got dunked on.
Q: What do you think makes a great Heartland Crew member?
A: Someone that is helpful and friendly. Willingness to support anyone, combined with a positive attitude.

Q: How has being part of Heartland Crew helped you feel connected to the Club and the game day environment?
A: From the very beginning, both Rohan Short (Head of Operations) and MJ Foster (Operations Assistant) have made a point of making sure we’re truly involved. It’s clear that we’re not just volunteers—we’re treated as an essential part of the team. This sense of belonging makes a huge difference and really lets us know that we are wanted and valued. Being included in this way has strengthened my connection with the Club and made game days even more meaningful and enjoyable.
Q: What do you love most about the Phoenix?
A: One of the true highlights for me is that my friends, my sister and my nieces are members — this makes every experience even more meaningful, as we get to enjoy everything together and create lasting memories side by side. There’s something magical about taking them court side and seeing their reactions; those moments are truly unforgettable.
Another aspect I deeply appreciate is the opportunity to meet all the members. Everyone brings their own unique energy and warmth, which really helps the community feel vibrant and welcoming. Whether I’m spending time with the crew or simply making new memories, every moment at the Phoenix feels special and inspiring.
Q: What would you say to someone thinking about joining Heartland Crew in NBL27?
A: Don’t have to say much, people see how much fun we have. Already have my niece and her friend joining us in NBL27.
