Ayre's Sandringham Cause Finals Upset

Ben Ayre and the Sandringham Sabres caused an NBL1 South qualifying finals upset over top of the ladder Austin Rapp’s Knox Raiders.

There was a lot on the line on Saturday night with the winner of the first vs fourth match up heading straight to the preliminary final while the loser gets a chance to keep their season alive with a second chance game in the semi-finals. It was a close game from the outset, but Sandringham took home the win by seven points (97-90).

Ayre was unstoppable for Sandringham, picking up a double-double as he hit the scoreboard for 23 points and was pivotal for his teammates with 12 assists.

While Rapp was huge defensively coming off the bench, wrapping up nine rebounds (six defensive boards), two steals, and two blocks.

Ayre and Sandringham move onto the preliminary final to play the winner out of Frankston Blues and Diamond Valley Eagles next weekend.

Knox Raiders now have a second chance to keep their finals alive when they meet Owen Foxwell’s Eltham Wildcats this Saturday in the semi-final.

Eltham Finals Chances Alive

Owen Foxwell and his team Eltham Wildcats took a comfortable 29-point win over Waverley Falcons in Saturday’s elimination final.

Foxwell had a quiet night on the scoring end with just nine points but assisted his teammates with six assists while working hard defensively with three steals.

With the win, Eltham and Foxwell continue their finals campaign when they take on the Knox Raiders in the knock-out final on Saturday.

Te Rangi’s Strong Finals Performances

Reuben Te Rangi and his side Auckland Tuatara finished runner-up to ex- Phoenix assistant coach Judd Flavell’s Canterbury Ram in Sunday’s NZ NBL grand final.

In the lead-up to the big clash, Auckland had a crucial 25-point win over the Franklin Bulls in the semi-final. Te Rangi was instrumental at both ends of the court with 23 points, six rebounds, three steals, and a block in the win.

Te Rangi’s performance continued to the grand final, where he scored a game-high 27 points, but it wasn’t enough to get his team over the line.

Gak Double-Double Domination

Gorjok Gak’s Willetton Tigers finished 1-1 in the final home and away round in NBL1 West.

In their first game on Friday night, the Tigers had a huge 25-point win over the South West Slammers as Gak picked up his 14th double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

He recorded another double-double in Saturday’s game against the Geraldton Buccaneers with 15 points and 12 rebounds, but sadly, the Tigers went down by eight points.

The massive win on Friday saw the Tigers finish third on the ladder and have a double chance to kick off their finals campaign this weekend. They will be out for revenge when they take on the Geraldton Buccaneers in the qualifying final on Saturday.
