South East Melbourne Phoenix swingman Ryan Broekhoff joined SEN Drive Monday night to talk about Phoenix’s start to the season.
Phoenix now have two games under the belt since coming back from Covid disruptions which saw them play no games in 28-days. With a loss and a win, Broekhoff was confident with how the team were going with the re-start.
(Ryan Broekhoff is happy with where Phoenix is sitting on the ladder.)
“We’re encouraged by where we are sitting at the moment, we started off really strong and had to come up against Sydney and obviously the long break due to covid complications. It affects each team differently,” he said.
“We came out pretty flat against Brisbane, they put us to the sword. Good to get back on track last night and rediscover a little bit of form and cohesion within the group and definitely a lot we can improve on still.”
(Broekhoff along with Xavier Munford assisting Zhou Qi off the ground.)
Phoenix are currently sitting 4 and 2 with a lot improvement still to come to get back in form but Broekhoff was happy with the strong roster that Phoenix has.
“The roster that has been put together is really strong and really deep. And we can play 10 to 12 guys at any time.
“Over the course of the season there will be injuries and unfortunately probably still have covid complications that we will rely on everybody to perform and produce, and we are confident we have guys to do that,” he said.
Broekhoff also spoke on his own form after dealing with mental health issues that saw him withdraw from taking his place with the Boomers squad in the Tokyo Olympics.
“I enjoy going into work every day and competing and playing and be around that culture and being engaged in it.
“The form is coming back with it, and I am able to perform and give back (to fans, friends and family),” he commented.
(Broekhoff is happy about the win against the JackJumpers but there is still improvement for the team.)
With a win against the JackJumpers on Sunday afternoon, Phoenix will be hoping to start off strong again against the Taipans on Tuesday night, with the opposition team not playing a game since New Year’s Eve.
Broekhoff and the rest of the Phoenix team will travel down to Gippsland for the first in-season NBL match to be played in the region, with the match taking place in Traralgon at the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium (GRISS).
Tickets are still available for tomorrow's game.
