Championship or bust for new Phoenix recruit

Angus Glover says he has a point to prove following his arrival in South East Melbourne, and is eyeing another Championship.

Despite his previous time with the Illawarra Hawks, Angus Glover personified all that was positive about the Sydney Kings over their two championships in NBL22 and NBL23.

Now, though, the 25-year-old is plotting the downfall of his former side, as he lines up the South East Melbourne Phoenix.

Glover has signed a two-year deal at his new club following the buyout of the final year of his contract at the Kings, and has already joined fellow sharpshooter Nathan Sobey in signing for last season’s bottom-place finishers.

In an earlier interview with CODE Sports, Glover said he will be forever grateful for the Kings organisation for backing him amidst a horrid run with injury, but the now Phoenix guard says winning is priority one at his new club.

“Things didn’t work out towards the end of last season for me, but here Mike’s (Kelly) told me I’ve got a lot more freedom to go out and play,” Glover told Phoenix Media.

“I’m just trying to make the most of that and play with utmost confidence.

“I’m just really looking forward to going out and proving a bit of a point, but I want to win at the end of the day and I’ll do anything I can to win, whether that’s diving on balls, waving a towel.

“Whatever I need to for this team to succeed, I’m willing to do … the end goal is to win a championship here.”

While getting embedded into a new club can be a difficult prospect for most new signings, Glover is already intimately familiar with the game of new South East Melbourne teammate Owen Foxwell, who he has played alongside at Eltham for the past two NBL1 seasons.

The pair form a lethal one-two punch in Eltham’s backcourt in NBL1 South, and are part of a fearsome line-up that also includes the likes of former Melbourne and New Zealand guard Sam Short.

Glover says Foxwell was one of South East Melbourne’s biggest advocates to him when it came time to find a new club at NBL level.

“Foxy obviously spoke quite highly of the Phoenix last year at our time with Eltham together and he’s done the same again this year before the announcement,” Glover said.

“I think Phoenix fans have already seen part of the connection we have at Eltham. We talk a bit of rubbish all the time. Last year was a bit of banter because we were playing against each other in the NBL and now being teammates both at NBL1 and NBL level is going to be really cool to be a part of.

“It’s not just him, but everybody else I know on the roster, I know quite well as well.

“Obviously [there’s] got a core group already here, I’m joining to that and I’m just looking forward to what the rest of the roster will look like.”
