Owen Foxwell’s career night has helped the Phoenix home in a thriller at John Cain Arena over the Illawarra Hawks, prevailing 103-100.
Looking for a win straight out of the FIBA Break and facing the second-placed Hawks, South East Melbourne had a slow start, falling 13-2 early in the first term.
But the on-court additions of Joe Wieskamp, Angus Glover, Tom Vodanovich and Foxwell proved impactful as the Phoenix were able to surge to a 13-0 run of their own to retake the lead.
Illawarra’s bigs threatened to take hold of the game, using their size and strength to dominate the boards and take a seven-point lead into the main break.
The Phoenix were a new side to start the second half erasing the margin almost instantaneously, Foxwell leading the charge as the hosts played with frantic pace.
The 21-year-old exploded in the second half scoring 14 points since the main break en route to a career high 22 points to go along with sixrebounds and seven assists.

The impact of the Eltham product on full display as his defensive prowess was felt, head coach Josh King praising his fledgling guard post-match.
Joe Wieskamp made his way back into the lineup after not featuring last game, the Iowa Hawkeye alumni responded by tallying 24 minutes 13 points and had a plus minus of +17 as he continues to build his confidence for the second half of the season.
Big man Jordan Hunter had a season high 23 points along with sixrebounds, including two threes showing his skill beyond the arc.

With less than a minute to go, Trey Kell III put up a last ditch effort in the face of Nathan Sobey but fell short as the Phoenix went on to win the game and keep their Play-In contention alive.
The Phoenix will next face the Cairns taipans at John Cain Arena on December 7th.
