Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer has informed the South East Melbourne ownership group of his intention to resign from his position.

Greer was a foundation member of the Phoenix and is currently the second longest serving CEO in the league, having played a major role in the creation of the club in 2018, serving as Chief Executive in each of the team’s six NBL seasons.

Greer will continue in his current role in the background over the next few months, collaborating closely with ownership to select a suitable candidate as his successor.

Following this transition, he will move into an advisory role with the club, supporting strategic initiatives and providing guidance through June 30, 2025.

“Firstly, I’d like to thank the ownership group and specifically Romie Chaudhari for entrusting me to launch a club in Australia’s basketball heartland and believing in our vision,” Greer said.

“Additionally, I’d also like to thank my colleagues along the journey, and the staff, sponsors, volunteers, members and fans of the Phoenix that have made my time in the South East of Melbourne a joy.

“I leave with a heavy heart, but I feel it’s the right time to step aside and let the next person come through and lead the club through its next period of success.”

Phoenix Managing Owner Romie Chaudhari paid tribute to Greer’s impact on the club and his tireless efforts over six years.

“It can’t be understated the impact that Tommy has had not only on the club, but on the development of the game in the biggest growth corridor of Australian basketball,” Chaudhari said.

“This club started with a single sheet of paper and through Tommy’s drive and vision we have a club that’s thriving, so I want to personally thank him and wish him luck in his next opportunity. He will always be a part of the Phoenix family.”

Under Greer’s leadership, the club has re-established NBL basketball in the sport’s Heartland, brought home Australian stars Mitch Creek and Ryan Broekhoff, and signed a landmark deal that brought Zhou Qi to Australia.

The club has delivered record-breaking community engagement, resulting in three Community Player of the Year awards, secured ongoing government funding to ensure the NBL and Phoenix brand is taken regionally through a partnership with LaTrobe City Council and Victorian State Government, achieved a game three semi-final appearance within three winning seasons out of five, and reached record memberships and attendance in the 2024 season, making it one of the fastest-growing clubs in the NBL.

Additionally, the club has secured and transitioned into the newly upgraded $132 million State Basketball Centre, which will be the franchise’s home for the foreseeable future.
