19-year-old Phoenix guard Owen Foxwell is in the sights of the Boomers’ selectors according to head coach Brian Goorjian.
Goorjian, who will coach Australia’s national men’s side at the upcoming FIBA World Cup in Asia, was asked which South East Melbourne players could make the jump to the national side in the future, and he quickly singled-out Foxwell.
“Owen Foxwell, he is a real talent … I look at him and think there is a tremendous talent there,” Goorjian told Phoenix Media.
Foxwell, approaching just his third season in the NBL, has rapidly risen from young rookie to an important part of the Phoenix’s plans, all of this after just 17 games.
(Goorjian could see Foxwell in the Boomers in the future.)
Goorjian also heaped praise on Phoenix MVP Mitch Creek, who will notch his sixth season in the Heartland in the upcoming campaign.
“Mitch is one of the best players in the league and he’s currently playing tremendously, so I’ve always got my eye on him.”
With the acquisition of a full suite of coaches and players from around the league, Goorjian believes the Phoenix have what it takes to make the playoffs this season, pending the filling of their remaining roster spots.
“I think the final spots are going to be huge … [Phoenix] got their imports right last year, they just couldn’t get the health right.”
“I think they’re right there [for a playoff berth], they’ve set a good foundation and it’s a team that can win championships.”
(Goorjian commented that he always has his eye on Creek for selection for the Boomers team.)
Goorjian, a Melburnian, will take the reins of the Australian Boomers as they search for a maiden medal at the FIBA World Cup.
