Basketball Operations boss Simon Mitchell has said his search for Mike Kelly’s replacement will extend across the globe to ensure the Phoenix find the right candidate.

After Kelly’s departure from the role on Sunday, Mitchell and Chief Executive Tommy Greer addressed the media and answered questions on what the next steps are.

Mitchell, in conjunction with team ownership, will lead the process of scouring basketball CVs and conducting interviews and hasn’t limited the search to Australia.

“We’ve had some world class people reach out … when we’ve gone through the resumes, the right person will reveal themselves.”

According to Mitchell, the Phoenix will look to move quickly but stressed that finding the right person was the priority.

Despite the Phoenix’s 0-5 start to the Hungry Jack’s NBL25 season, Mitchell highlighted that the playing group has stuck together and are eyeing off a play-in position at campaign’s end.

“One of the things with this group is that they’re very united … we’ve got 24 games to go and we can still make a run as we saw last year with Illawarra.”

“This group is solid, they believe in each other and we believe in them.”

The team will be led by interim head coach Sam Mackinnon, who Mitchell said wants a shot at the full-time role and will be considered in the process.

The Phoenix next play Melbourne United at John Cain Arena on Sunday. Phoenix fans can catch the action from our first ever Watch Party at the Mountain Goat Brewery in Richmond. Spots are limited so register your interest HERE now.
