Greer Confident in New Look Backcourt

With the Hungry Jacks NBL23 season fast approaching, South East Melbourne Phoenix's roster is building for the season.
CEO Tommy Greer spoke to Kane Pitman at ESPN about the structure the club is building and the importance of import signings of Gary Browne and Trey Kell.
Browne and Kell will be Phoenix's first-ever import backcourt line up.
"The guards are a big part. Last year we lacked a true point guard, and that's what we've tried to bring in with Gary. Someone who can control the tempo of the game, and his focus is distribution and getting teammates involved," Greer told ESPN.
"That was a focus, also someone who prides himself on the defensive end of the floor as well."
(Pureto Rican, Browne and American, Kell will make up Phoenix's first ever import backcourt.)
Last season the Phoenix had the third lowest ranking defence in the NBL, improving on that end of the floor has become a big focus for head coach Simon Mitchell and his team.
"We feel like we've ticked a box with him (Browne), then with his counterpart in Trey Kell, it's another player who's proven himself on the defensive end of the floor for Milan in the EuroLeague, applies pressure full court and also gives us that weapon offensively.
"He's going to be one of the best scorers in the pick-and-roll and will give us an option late in the game. We struggled in the last five minutes of games last year; we feel like having a piece like Trey will go a long way to remedying that part," Greer said.
(Make sure to be at Phoenix's first home game on October 1 at the Fire Pit to see them take on the JackJumpers.)
Phoenix still has one import spot to fill at the centre position; once that signing is finalised, the focus shifts to the remaining available roster spots.
