For the second time in 2020, San Diego State Aztecs star Yanni Wetzell has made the decision to join South East Melbourne Phoenix for NBL21.
The 24-year-old New Zealander signed with the Phoenix in July before exercising his European out-clause in August and now is returning to South East Melbourne.
He is on a two-year deal (player option after first) and has no outs for the upcoming season.
Wetzell was due to play in Germany but passport complications led to a reassessment of his options with the Kiwi big man ultimately re-joining the club that allowed him to chase his international dream and let him know that if it didn’t work out he’d be welcomed back with open arms.
The emerging star ended his stellar American college career as one of the most highly sought-after free agents on the NBL market and will immediately boost the Phoenix’s big man rotation.

He says the way the Phoenix handled his initial departure was a big factor in his decision to return.
“It was a very difficult decision for me to leave in the first place,” Wetzell said.
“The initial exit was so professional. They were super supportive and said they loved creating the relationship with me and they would support me and my journey.
“Judd (Flavell) kept reaching out while I was out here in Germany and we talked every couple of weeks and I know Tommy (Greer) was keeping tabs with my agent. The way we left things and the way we still communicated was definitely a factor in me being keen to return.
“I’ve heard it’s a great group of guys and the fellas have been working hard back in the gym. I just can’t wait to get to down under and get moving and get working with the team.”
The 208cm (6’10) big man was a fan favourite on San Diego State’s 30-2 team last season, averaging just under 12 points and seven rebounds per game.
Wetzell’s athleticism above the rim and ability to step out to the three-point line make him a versatile offensive threat and an exciting NBL talent.

Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer says the culture building at the club paid dividends in this unique situation.
“At the Phoenix we talk about staying true to our word,” Greer said.
“Part of being seen as a destination club for players is helping them grow and develop. It’s hard when they leave, but being true to our values means sometimes you welcome them back.”
Wetzell is currently in Germany and will now begin the process of returning to Melbourne and joining the Phoenix as they prepare for an assault on the NBL21 championship.
The Phoenix have now filled their eight local player positions with Mitch Creek, Adam Gibson, Dane Pineau, Cam Gliddon, Kyle Adnam, Reuben Te Rangi, Kendall Stephens and Wetzell. Izayah Mauriohooho-Le’afa has signed as a development player.
Two imports, a likely Next Star and possibly additional development players will complete the roster.
