Casey Marketing and Communications Officer Ashley Szalek on…

Future plans:

“We currently play in Big V Championship division with our senior men’s and women’s, and we want to advance both of those into the NBL1 program as soon as possible.”

“We want to continue to engage in the community and also advance through the ranks of the VJBL level to get more teams playing at the highest level.”

What entering the NBL1 program would do for Casey:

“It really develops our pathways and also highlights that the association as a whole is best practice in all facets, on and off the court.”

What makes their association special:

“I’m sure many associations say this but it’s definitely the family culture. There’re many associations that as they get larger, tend to drop off in that area, which is sort of natural.”

“As we’ve got as large as we’re getting, they tend to drop in that area, where we haven’t really seen that yet.”

“We’ve really worked hard across domestic and representative level to make sure everyone is welcome and everyone knows each other.”

Having an NBL team back in the region:

“It just benefits the sport as a whole. We’ve seen increased numbers as the sport’s profile continues to grow and having South East Melbourne in our area has really boosted us.”

“More kids are coming to play basketball rather than going to other sports, which is a great result.”

Is the Casey community jumping on the Phoenix?

“Yeah, definitely. We’ve seen a number of people.”

“Prior to South East Melbourne coming along, everyone was aligned with Melbourne United. We’ve seen a fair few people jump across.”

Why you should get involved in basketball:

“It’s a great sport played indoors. It promotes fitness, which helps with weight management in youth. There’s always the childhood obesity problem which we’re trying to help battle.”

“It’s also good for mental health; mateship, kids learning social skills. While basketball is the key factor, we always try to make sure we maintain a vision that there’s bigger things than basketball and it’s about how we can bring that together.”

Returning to play:

“We’ll kick off the new season as soon as we’re allowed to, whether that’s through training or through games, however that looks. We have all the preparations in place.”

“We got so close last time, I think we were a week away from kicking off competitions prior to going into further restrictions. The positive side of that is all the preparations are done, so everything’s ready to go once COVID-19 stops.”

“In the meantime, we’ve innovated and adapted our thinking to engage with our members and the community as a whole. On our website we’ve got over 40 workouts and videos of all individual skills for kids.”
