Phoenix big man Dane Pineau has been ruled out for the remainder of the NBL21 season.
Pineau battled a back injury to start the season before returning for one game in March. He was then struck down by knee and wrist complaints, which have both since been operated on, ruling him out until next season.
"I’ve been out of the game for so long with my back, knee and wrist injuries so I realised even if I was to get myself healthy before the season finished it wouldn’t make sense for me to play," Pineau said.
"I haven’t played with the guys in so long and I’ve been out of the game for a while so it would be impossible to have the fitness and rhythm required to help out a team possibly playing finals.
"I’d love to be playing and travelling with the guys but that’s part of sport. I’ve just got to get myself healthy and make sure next season I pay back the club."
Luckily for the Phoenix heading into a potential finals series, they've found a way to win without last year's Most Improved Player and Defensive Player of the Year finalist.
Pineau is considered one of the premier defensive centres and rebounders in the league after his breakout season last year and will now focus his energies on returning for a big NBL22 campaign at the Phoenix.
The fan favourite has continued to bring his contagious energy and positivity to the group all year despite his personal struggles and can't wait to join his teammates on the floor again next season.
