The Phoenix have two roster spots remaining to fill, and two attributes the newcomers are sure to have are length and size.

That is if Josh King gets his way.

King, now in his second year at the Phoenix, prefers additional length and the ability to play a multitude of positions.

He’s recruited players like Vrenz Bleijenbergh, DJ Mitchell and Hunter Maldonado all who can occupy any role on court and all who bring with them extra height.

“I’m looking at guys with length and size because one injury means the next guy can slide up or down depending,” King told SEN’s Andy Maher and Josh Jenkins.

“In saying that though, I don’t discriminate and am happy to have a 5”5 guard like (NBA star) Muggsy Bogues on the roster.”

King formed a recruiting panel that includes his assistant coaches and has kept a close eye on the NBL1 competition that wraps in the next few weeks.

One player who continues to grow is Boomers’ starter Owen Foxwell, who will spend a fifth year in the Heartland.

“Last year through injury Owen was elevated to a starting position and thrived.”

“He’s doing great things with the national side and we’re really proud of him, excited to get him back with us too.”

The Phoenix start their NBL26 campaign with two pre-season games at State Basketball Centre next week, taking on the Cairns Taipans on Tuesday, August 19 and Melbourne United on Saturday, August 23. CLICK HERE TO GET TICKETS.

The Phoenix are currently running a one-day only deal through SEN, where $99 will get you an incredible nine games of action with South East Melbourne.
