This Sunday, South East Melbourne Phoenix will celebrate their loyal members for their Member Appreciation Round at their final home game at the Fire Pit.
Phoenix are highlighting their amazing members starting with a Q&A from one of Phoenix’s foundation members, Shane Fernandez.
How long have you been a member for Phoenix?
Our whole family are Foundation members of Phoenix.

(Shane and his family.)
What made you want to be a member for the Phoenix?
My two boys play basketball which they absolutely love. When we heard a new basketball club was being formed near to where we live, we thought this would be a fantastic opportunity to support and be part of the club in their foundation years.
Have you been a fan of basketball for your whole life?
Yes, from the incredible 80’s and 90’s to then watching Gaze and Copland in the Melbourne Tigers and to now watching Kyle Adnam and Mitch Creek lead the Phoenix out. I have always enjoyed watching basketball.
What has been a Phoenix highlight since you have joined?
The players and coaches have been amazing, they are all very approachable. We go to all the signing days for the kids, and we found the players to be incredibly gracious with their time. The kids love meeting and chatting with players and coaches.
I also coach basketball. Phoenix gave the kids from our club the opportunity to watch a training session. It gave the kids an insight into what it takes to train to make it as a professional basketball player. The kids also got to meet the players which made it a fun and memorable day for them.
What’s your favourite part of supporting the Phoenix?
Seeing the enjoyment on my kids’ faces as they put on their Phoenix gear to watch the Phoenix play. We all have so much fun at every game. There are also a few other families we know who have also become members of the Phoenix. It is a great place to meet and watch the basketball team we all enjoy supporting. We have also made friends with other members who attend each game.
Do you feel like the club appreciates and gives back to the members and why?
We love how members can go back after the game to see the players close up and get feedback as to how the club is going. It also allows the kids to meet and get signatures of all the players.
(Shane's sons with Kyle Adnam.)
Who is your favourite past/current player?
Cam Gliddon was one of our favourites. Our two boys had some coaching sessions with Cam, so we got to know him pretty well. Of course, our boys love Mitch Creek. We have met Mitch a few times and he has been amazing with all the kids and parents. I personally enjoy watching Reuben Te Rangi play. His number is on the back of my Phoenix Jersey. Kyle is also one of my favourites.
Why should other Phoenix fans join as a member?
It is a fantastic club and very approachable. Lots of enjoyment during all the games, the players are available for the members and kids to meet with after each game.
