Mitchell, South East Melbourne’s inaugural coach for their first four seasons, returns to the club in the position as the Phoenix look to bolster their high-performance department.
Mitchell will focus on recruitment and basketball strategy, already having played a pivotal role in the Phoenix’s off-season moves so far. Additionally, he will serve as the key conduit between the club’s performance and administrative departments.
Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer welcomed Simon back to the Heartland in the new role.
“Simon has great basketball smarts and a keen eye for talent and fit. This paired with his strong financial acumen, made him the ideal candidate for this newly created role,” Greer said.
“I know the fans will join us in being thrilled to have Simon back in the fold and our ownership group are also really excited about Simon’s potential in this leadership position. (Head coach) Mike Kelly and his team are already working hand-in-hand with Simon which has paid some early dividends in our off-season roster build.”
The Phoenix are nearing the conclusion of the search for a High-Performance Manager who will report into Mitchell.
