South East Melbourne Phoenix is pleased to welcome Nathan Sobey, who will join the organisation on a one-year deal, with a mutual option for a second-year.

The 262-game NBL veteran is a native Victorian, with the Phoenix the first opportunity Sobey will have to play for a team in his home state after stints with the Cairns Taipans, Adelaide 36ers and Brisbane Bullets

Sobey has played 11 seasons in the NBL, averaging 11.7 points, four rebounds and three assists per game, earning All-NBL First Team honours in NBL21 and three All-NBL Second Team nominations.

His last two seasons with Brisbane were particularly impressive, leading the franchise in points, steals and assists to claim the Leroy Loggins MVP in NBL23 and NBL24.

Additionally, the 33-year-old has an impressive CV at the national level, earning a Bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and a Gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast with the Australian Boomers.

Phoenix General Manager of Basketball Operations Simon Mitchell welcomed Sobey to the club and was excited to work with the seasoned guard.

“It’s a great coup to have Nathan come across and his experience and leadership will be paramount to our plans in NBL25,” Mitchell said.

“Above all, we look forward to the Heartland embracing Nathan, his wife CC and his two children as we gain momentum heading into the new campaign.”

The Phoenix currently have on their roster the two highest-scoring Australians in the league in Mitch Creek and Sobey.

Sobey is the Phoenix’s first acquisition in the Free Agency period heading into NBL25.

He will wear #20 for the Phoenix.
