One of the most impactful imports in NBL history, Walton Jr’s storied career in Australia will now continue with the Phoenix.
Despite playing just one season with the Sydney Kings, Walton Jnr claimed an NBL title and was adjudged the Most Valuable Player in the playoff series, subsequently named to the All-NBL First Team.
Walton Jr is also one of just five players to have scored 45 points in a single game in the NBL’s 40-minute era – in the same legendary game in Traralgon where new teammate and Phoenix captain Mitch Creek scored 46 points – highlighting the guard’s scoring prowess.
The American guard has an abundance of experience, featuring with the Kings in the NBL, the Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers and Detroit Pistons in the NBA and most recently with Zhejiang Lions in the Chinese Basketball Association.
Phoenix General Manager of Basketball Operations Simon Mitchell said Walton Jr would be an integral part of the team’s push back up the NBL table.
“Derrick is another puzzle piece we’ve added to our burgeoning roster, and what an incredible player we get to have in the Heartland,” Mitchell said.
“His scoring power and his game sense makes him one of the most damaging point guards we’ve seen in recent history, and the players around him will only benefit from that skillset.
“We look forward to welcoming Derrick to South East Melbourne when he returns to Australia ahead of NBL25.”
Walton Jr joins Nathan Sobey, Angus Glover and Jordan Hunter as the Phoenix’s off-season acquisitions ahead of NBL25.
