South East Melbourne Phoenix games are set to return to near full capacity just in time for their home opener against Illawarra at John Cain Arena on December 4.
With vaccination rates soaring in Victoria, the state government have mapped out plans for spectators to safely return to stadiums.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has set a goal of 80,000 fans to attend the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, indicating a summer of big crowds at sporting events.
NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger has welcomed the news, saying it justifies the league’s decision to put fans first and delay the opener.
“When we shifted our season back to start on December 3, fans were our priority and having them back in stadiums around the country and in New Zealand, and watching their teams play again, as often as possible, was our main aim,” Loeliger said via The Age.
“We are delighted things are opening up around the nation, and we look forward to seeing the stands full at games. There’s so much anticipation ahead of tip-off, and we can’t wait to see our fans back where they belong.”
Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer says the latest developments are cause for celebration for Phoenix fans.
"Our passionate fanbase has been waiting for the opportunity to watch the team live for a while and will now get the chance to reconnect with us at a buzzing John Cain Arena," Greer said.
"December 4 will be a huge day for our club with the return of our fans and the welcoming of new stars, including Zhou Qi, who will be making his NBL debut. We cannot wait."
The Phoenix's December 4 game against the Hawks will be Victoria' first NBL fixture since the NBL21 Grand Final decider.
