Each club will play four Wednesday night games during the regular season. Results will count towards both the NBL standings and the Ignite Cup ladder.
Scoring is simple: a win is worth three points, and each quarter won adds an extra point. With eight points up for grabs per game, every possession matters.
The top two teams will face off in a grand final, with $300,000 going to the winner and $100,000 to the runner-up – prize money shared between players and the club.
For the Phoenix, the Ignite Cup tips off with two Heartland showdowns:
- TICKETS vs Tasmania JackJumpers – Wednesday, December 10, 7.30pm (Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium)
- TICKETS vs New Zealand Breakers – Wednesday, January 21, 7.30pm (State Basketball Centre)
South East Melbourne will also travel to Cairns on New Year’s Eve and to Perth on January 29 to complete its Ignite Cup schedule.
Phoenix CEO Simon Derrick said the competition would not only bring more excitement to the season, but also deliver elite basketball deeper into Victoria.
“This is an innovative move by the league, and fans are at the forefront of it – higher scoring, a fresh points system and another trophy to chase,” Derrick said.
“We’re especially proud to bring Cup games to the Heartland, with Gippsland and the State Basketball Centre hosting more NBL action than ever before. It’s a fantastic chance for Victorians to experience the very best basketball right in their backyard.”
The additional Ignite Cup game represents the first time the Phoenix has played multiple fixtures in the Gippsland region, with thanks to the Victorian Government (through the Significant Sports Events Fund) and the Latrobe City Council for additional funding and their continued support and commitment to growing the game.
