An integral part of the Phoenix’s fixture, the 3,000-patron capacity Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium will once again form part of the club’s Heartland Games series, with the Phoenix taking on the Perth Wildcats on Sunday, December 13.
The Gippsland region has been a happy hunting ground for the Phoenix, with the club boasting a 67 per cent winning record at GRISS, thanks in no small part to the raucous home-court atmosphere created by the local community.
Phoenix CEO Simon Derrick said the annual Gippsland game had become a fixture that Phoenix and basketball fans from across the region looked forward to each season.
“The annual Latrobe City game is now synonymous with the Phoenix, and the Latrobe Valley community really rallies behind it every year,” Derrick said.
“You can feel that support inside the stadium, and it creates an atmosphere that is unique to the regional games we play. The club is always so warmly welcomed to the region, the games have been some of the best produced in the NBL, and it’s something we hope to continue long into the future.
“We’d also like to acknowledge the contributions made by the Victorian Government through the Significant Sporting Events Fund, and Latrobe City Council, whose support helps make this event possible.”
Latrobe City Council Mayor Councillor Sharon Gibson said the return of South East Melbourne Phoenix was great news for local sports fans.
"We can't wait to welcome the team back to Traralgon. The atmosphere at GRISS has been fantastic over the past four years and I know our community will once again get behind the team," Cr Gibson said.
"It’s a great opportunity for local families to see elite sport close to home, while bringing visitors to our region ad creating a real buzz in the community."
Tickets for the Phoenix’s clash with the Perth Wildcats on Sunday, December 13 are available now via AXS.
