After the success of South East Melbourne Phoenix's NBL22 home game in Gippsland against Cairns, the Phoenix are excited to announce their partnership with the Latrobe City Council will continue for NBL23.
The Phoenix take on the Sydney Kings at Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium on Sunday, December 18th.
The event was supported by Latrobe City Council, who were keen for the Phoenix to return.
Mayor of Latrobe City Cr Kellie O'Callaghan welcomed the news of Phoenix's return.
"We're excited to welcome both teams to Latrobe City for a fantastic night of basketball later in the year. Our basketball-loving community will relish the opportunity to watch elite-level players in their backyard, and we hope to see another capacity crowd," said the Mayor.
(After the sucess of NBL22 game, Phoenix will return to Traralgon for NBL23 game aganist Sydney Kings.)
Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer was excited the team would again be bringing elite sport to Gippsland
"It's great to be able to return to Gippsland after the success of our game in NBL22. Being able to utilise the redevelopment of GRISS and be one of the first professional sports to play there was special," Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer said.
Phoenix played in front of a near-capacity crowd of 2,634. The team's reception from the local basketball fans meant returning was a priority.
"The noise in the stadium was outstanding; they were so loud that we couldn't hear ourselves for a lot of the game," head coach Simon Mitchell said post-game in NBL22.
"I want to thank the crowd; they carried us with their energy and allowed us to continue to pressure the opposition. Regional Victoria has produced so many great sportsmen and women, and not just for our code, so it's great to bring games like this to them," he said.
(Phoenix will have the opportunity to connect with the Gippsland community when they visit in December.)
The Phoenix will also be out and about in Gippsland leading up to the game; this is something they planned to do last season before Covid-19 restrictions meant this was impossible.
"The opportunity to connect with basketball fans in the community of Gippsland is important for our club. It's a chance to see the basketball talent in the regional town and create some new Phoenix fans while there," Greer said.
