The Phoenix have today acquired the highly sought after signature of Luke Fennell as a development player for the NBL25 season.
A local product of Berwick in Melbourne’s South-East, Fennell is currently a part of the NBA Global Academy based out of Canberra’s Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).
Fennell, a rising star in Australian basketball is fresh off a Gold Medal with the Centre of Excellence in the bi-annual Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Germany.
The 17-year-old averaged 8.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and led the team in assists with 2.4 per game to help Australia to their first title in 14 years.
It’s been a successful year for Fennell already, his recent title win in Germany paired with a Gold Medal with the Victorian U-20 team in Ballarat.
Phoenix General Manager of Basketball Operations Simon Mitchell said the team, and Fennell, would benefit greatly from one another.
“It’s great to have Luke officially join us at the Phoenix. We know a number of teams were after his services and it's great that one of Australia’s brightest talents has chosen to stay in the Heartland,” Mitchell said.
“Luke gets to stay in the South East of Melbourne and develop within the world class facilities we now have at the State Basketball Centre.”
“Additionally, Luke will bring a great amount of skill and energy to our squad and we look forward to having him as part of our program.”
Fennell has had a long association with the Phoenix, having first trained with the club as a 14-year-old.
Fennell joins Derrick Walton Jr, Nathan Sobey, Angus Glover and Jordan Hunter as South East Melbourne’s off-season acquisitions ahead of NBL25.
