February Hoops Fest is almost upon us with the February 5's Lunar New Year game the first cab of the rank. This game is a chance for South East Melbourne Phoenix to make Chinese import, Zhou Qi and all new Phoenix fans feel at home as we celebrate the Lunar New Year.
Presented by OtterBox and supported by National Foundation for Australia-China Relations.
"Zhou Qi has quickly become a valued member of the Phoenix family, as has the legion of fans he has converted to Phoenix fans. This is our way as a club to make him and them feel welcome," CEO Tommy Greer said. "Our Lunar New Year game will become a permanent part of our season and it's a game we hope grows each year."
This will be the first time in 2022 that Phoenix hit the court at John Cain Arena, in all it has been 57 days since our last home game at JCA. The occasion will see the Fire Pit taking on a Lunar New Year flavour, which is one game Phoenix fans won’t want to miss.
"Our first ever games as a club were played in China when in May 2019, we visited Nanjing and Shanghai with Victorian Sports Minister Martine Pakula and played two games against the Jiangsu Dragons and Shanghai Sharks," Greer said.
Game day will feature Chinese themed entertainment, including a lion dance by the South East Melbourne based Hung Hing organisation. As an organisation they have over 20 years of experience in delivering high quality performances.
(The Fire Pit will have a Lunar New Year flavour for Phoenix's first ever Lunar New Year game.)
In addition, Phoenix members will be able to collect Zhou Qi's player card, with 100 lucky people receiving a signed version.
“This season thanks to the addition of Chinese superstar Zhou Qi we have further strengthened our partnership with the Chinese community, it has been pleasing to see so many new Chinese fans engaging with the Phoenix and coming to our home games,” he said.
2022 is the Year of the Tiger, which symbolises strength and bravery, making big changes, a year of risk-taking and adventure. The Year of the Tiger also has as strong emphasis on being fired up and finding enthusiasm for life.
The qualities of the Year of the Tiger exemplify exactly how the Phoenix are approaching the challenges of NBL22, facing every obstacle with strength, bravery, and enthusiasm.
(It will be 57 days since Phoenix played at JCA.)
Phoenix fans will also be fired up and ready to help the team get the win.
“Our connection to our community is what makes our club great, everyone is welcome, and everyone is part of the Phoenix family,” Greer said.
Tickets for Feb 5th against Perth Wildcats and the next two home games are now on sale.
