At the South East Melbourne Phoenix it's all about walking the talk. Anyone can say they are community minded, but being community minded is in the Phoenix DNA. When the club launched, impacting on the community of the South East was one of the key pillars of the club.
At the South East Melbourne Phoenix it's all about walking the talk. Anyone can say they are community minded, but being community minded is in the Phoenix DNA.
When the club launched, impacting on the community of the South East was one of the key pillars of the club.
That community focus comes from the top down, and is something every new Phoenix player is encouraged to embrace.
One of those community initiatives is the NBL’s GameTime by Kmart. The school based program is a chance to bring the NBL experience to the school yard. Kids are able to learn the game and even play basketball with their favourite NBL stars in a fun, friendly, and inclusive environment. Each season the NBL task clubs with reaching 10,000 school children.
Last season the Phoenix hit that target in just six months, this year they have managed to do it in four and a half months, seven months ahead of the NBL deadline.
(South East Melbourne Phoenix have reached the target of visiting 10,000 school kids in just over 4 months.)
“The ability for us to have a lot of change in our roster, but still have the players buy into what we are about is fantastic”, Phoenix CEO, Tommy Greer said.
“We pride ourselves on our community work and it’s an amazing achievement that our Community Team has had this reach with GameTime by Kmart. All at the club are proud of this accomplishment.”
In just over four months the Phoenix Players and Community Team visited 22 schools across South East Melbourne, and by the end of the season they will have impacted the lives of more than 23,000 children through GameTime by Kmart.
"These children are the future of the sport, so for many of them to experience their first look at basketball through the Phoenix is great for the club, and the game."
