South East Melbourne Phoenix welcomes the commencement of construction of the $132 million State Basketball Centre Redevelopment at Knox Regional Sports Park.
The redevelopment will enable the Phoenix to house operations under one roof, with the front office joining the team, who are already based at the State Basketball Centre.
The Victorian Government has committed $105 million for the expansion and upgrade of the centre, while Knox City Council increased their contribution to the project from $25m to $27 million.
Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer said the entire organisation was excited by the prospect of enhanced training facilities and housing the entire franchise under the same roof.
“To have this re-development begin on the eve of our third season is a great step forward for the club. After a record breaking first year, we followed up with our first trip to the finals in year two. From day one the Heartland of basketball has embraced us,” Greer said.
“The commencement of these works embeds us deeper into the Heartland, and connects us even more with the most knowledgeable, and passionate basketball fans in Australia.
“The commitment from the State Government and Knox City Council is fantastic for our entire community.”
The redevelopment will include:
- Deliver 12 new indoor courts – taking the total number of indoor courts to 18 - long-term home of Knox basketball - delivering for the growth in the community.
- Provide an administrative base for the not only the Phoenix but for Deakin Melbourne Boomers, along with Basketball Australia, Basketball Victoria and Knox Basketball.
- Deliver Australia’s premier basketball facility.
- Once completed in 2023, the centre will host up to two million visitors a year.
- Will support more than 500 jobs in construction and more than 100 ongoing roles once completed.
