The South East Melbourne Phoenix are set to relaunch their junior development pathway, with the Phoenix Academy returning for its second intake this April.
Young players across the Heartland region will have their first opportunity to earn selection at tryouts on April 15, open to athletes from Under-12 through to Under-18 level. Successful participants will enter a 16-week program designed to replicate the demands of elite basketball.
Academy director Nick Smith said the program aims to provide more than just on-court improvement, instead focusing on building habits that translate beyond the game.
“We’re trying to create an environment that mirrors the professional level,” Smith said. “It’s about helping kids understand what it takes to improve, but also giving them tools they can apply in their everyday lives.”

The program is led by South East Melbourne Phoenix and Australian Boomers assistant coach Luke “Trig” Brennan, alongside a group of experienced coaches from across Melbourne’s basketball scene.
Smith believes Brennan’s presence is a key point of difference for the Academy.
“Having someone with that level of experience is invaluable,” he said. “The athletes can see what’s possible and learn directly from someone who’s been at the top of the game.”

Following a successful first intake, Smith said he has already seen strong development among younger age groups, particularly in their approach to training and competition.
The Academy also aims to remain accessible, offering a structured, high-performance program at a relatively affordable price point.
Tryouts will mark the first step for aspiring players looking to take their game to the next level.
