Signing off for Term One!

The South East Melbourne Phoenix mental health and wellbeing program, Phoenix Soar, has wrapped up for Term 1 visiting 540 students in year five and six classrooms across Victoria.

Through Phoenix Soar, schools are supported with the facilitation of social and emotional learning by combining athlete storytelling, in classroom discussions and activities with outdoor, on court, and real-life scenarios. This merging of physical activity and social and emotional learning enables students to understand themselves and others, and manage their relationships, lives, learning and challenges more effectively.

One in seven primary aged children experience ill mental health, and when help is eventually sought, it is often years after the problem’s onset. Phoenix Soar sets students up for success by enabling them to build their own coach’s handbook with strategies to manage their mental wellbeing now and into the future.

For the 2023 program, students sign on as the Head Coach of the South East Melbourne Phoenix. Over the four-week program:

  • students explore help seeking when they recruit their assistant coaches or ‘their support crew’ in session one.
  • students discover important personal strengths for people around them to have when they select their starting five in session two.
  • students begin to recognise emotions in themselves and others by understanding how different emotions feel, behave and sound in session three.
  • students identify ways to help manage emotions by building offensive and defensive strategies in session four.
