Skylar Mays says the opportunity to help South East Melbourne take the next step was the key reason behind his move to the Phoenix.
After discussions with the club, the NBA veteran was excited by the chance to join a team he believes is on the verge of something special.
"Simon reached out to me about an opportunity to help a team win... a team that's right on the cusp of great things," Mays said.
"To be a part of something like that in a new country was something I was really intrigued by."
Australia won't be completely unfamiliar for the 27-year-old. Through former teammates including Duop Reath, Ben Simmons and Matisse Thybulle, Mays has long heard about the country's passion for basketball.
"I've heard great things about Australia," he said.
"The energy behind the game, the excitement and the entertainment the NBL brings as a growing league."
Mays also expects to feel right at home off the court.
"I've been around quite a few Australians throughout my career and they all have that joyous energy," he said.
"I think that's what I'm most excited for."
Now, with his move to Melbourne just days away, Mays is eager to get to work.
"We've got a long season ahead of us and a lot of hard work to get to the ultimate goal."
