Phoenix veteran Nathan Sobey heaped praise on Josh King, saying the head coach might be the catalyst for a South East Melbourne title.

King is into his second year as coach, and his first full preseason, and Sobey - in his 12th NBL campaign - believes the head of the snake could be the difference maker.

“Having Josh for a second year (is why we can win it),” Sobey told SEN’s Kane Cornes and David King.

“We go in understanding what he’s about, and I think the style of play suits who we are and it’s going to be really exciting.”

The Phoenix haven’t yet lifted the trophy in seven seasons, but fell one game short of a Grand Final series in a history-defying NBL26 despite an 0-5 start.

Sobey is on the precipice of a 300th NBL game and credits the assistance of Larry Kestleman as to why the league is currently thriving.

“My first year to now is crazy how you look at it, it’s a credit to Larry and his group.”

“To continually grow is great to see and it’s great to see basketball in general thriving in Australia.”

Sobey’s Phoenix will kickstart the pre-season with a game against Cairns on Tuesday, August 19 - one of six games they’ll feature in ahead of the Melbourne launch of the season proper on Saturday, September 20.

The Phoenix are currently running a one-day only deal through SEN, where $99 will get you an incredible nine games of action with South East Melbourne.
