Nathan Sobey has been to the big dance – and while he ultimately fell short in the 2018 Grand Final Series with the Adelaide 36ers – he knows what it takes to get there.
And he thinks the roster that his new side, the South East Melbourne Phoenix, are building have all the right puzzle pieces to be great.
“To win a championship, you’ve got to tick the right boxes in the pre-season and off-season and I think we’re doing that so far,” Sobey told Phoenix Media.
“There’s a long way to go, but we’re doing the right things right now in terms of bringing in the right people that can really get after it on both ends.
Sobey was the Phoenix’s first off-season acquisition after NBL24, but have since added guards Derrick Walton Jr, Angus Glover and Luke Fennell, who at 17 impressed Sobey in the few sessions they’ve had together.
“Luke is all about the right things and really wanting to get better on his game. And I love to see that.”
“He impressed me, he’s a great young kid.”
Sobey will relocate permanently to Melbourne ahead of the start of the pre-season in July, and until then will round out the NBL1 North season with Ipswich Force.
