"They believe they can win every game now, which they certainly didn’t believe at the start of the season."
It was a big comeback win from the South East Melbourne Phoenix in Sunday’s Throwdown and it could be a season defining moment for a team that looked destined to be towards the bottom of the standings after the opening rounds.
“I’m a believer. I do think they can do it,” former Sydney Kings captain Brad Rosen said on NBL Now about the possibility of South East Melbourne making the postseason.
“I had them in my top six at the beginning of the year, but then they went 0-5 to start.
“Since that, they’ve gone 8-4…that’s one of the best in the league.”
The Phoenix outscored Melbourne United by 20 in the second half to help cap off an incredible performance on their home floor in front of a packed John Cain Arena on Sunday.
While Matt Hurt continued his outstanding season with 28 points, it was the Phoenix guards who were the difference makers in the end, including Nathan Sobey’s incredible line of 22 points, 7 assists, 6 steals and 5 rebounds.
“I still think everything revolves around Nathan Sobey,” Rosen said.
“When he’s playing good basketball, when he’s taking the right shots and there’s ball movement, I think they’re great.”
Rosen believes the Phoenix have a renewed spirit and it’s one that could make them dangerous as the season reaches its climax.
“The team look happy, and they believe, they believe they can win every game now, which they certainly didn’t believe at the start of the season,” he said.
It all sets up for one of the games of the round this weekend, when Montrezl Harrell and the Adelaide 36ers come to town on Saturday night at 8pm AEDT.
