Coach Search Ramps Up Ahead of Free Agency

South East Melbourne Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer has put in place a timeline for the installation of the club’s next head coach, as expressions of interest for the role closed on Monday.
A list of over 25 names will be reviewed and trimmed down in the coming days to create a short list of invitees to take part in the interview process to become the club’s second head coach in its short history.
The selection process from there will then ramp up quickly, and the club will look to have the role filled with enough time for the new head coach to have a full run at free agency, which begins on March 30.
That timeline would see any contracted US based coaches excluded from the job — including early favourite Trevor Gleeson, who is still bound to the Toronto Raptors in the NBA.
(Fan favourites Foxwell and Rissetto will return for NBL24.)
“We are looking for a strong, defensive-minded leader with a proven track record in the recruitment and development of talent, to lead us in our pursuit of our first championship,” said CEO Tommy Greer.
In other off-season news for the Phoenix, the club last week rewarded local guard and former DP Owen Foxwell with a roster spot for the next two seasons, as well as locking away fan favourite Anzac Rissetto for one more year as a development player, with a club option for a roster spot in the following season.
The young duo join Alan Williams, Mitch Creek, and Reuben Te Rangi as players contracted to the Phoenix for NBL24.
