One of the Heartland’s most uniquely passionate contributors is running a marathon to raise money for Deaf Indigenous Youth in Australia.
Ramas McRae, a Phoenix platinum member and proud member of the deaf community, is running the marathon virtually in his home area of Sunshine West in November.
Ramas’ campaigning is making a real difference in the community and he urges the Phoenix family to get on board.
“I know that the Deaf Aboriginal Youth haven’t had any programs for a long time now, so we need to support them to set up successful programs so Deaf Aboriginal community leaders can emerge in the future,” he said.
“Deaf Aboriginal Youth currently don’t have an organisation as such, but recently Deaf Aboriginal Services was established and I asked them if it was possible for them to set up a Youth Program so I could fundraise, donate the money to them and they could use it how they see fit for the Deaf Aboriginal Youth across Australia for things like camps, presentations, and supporting Deaf Aboriginal Youth with projects.”

Ramas joined the Phoenix along with his hearing impaired friend for the club’s inaugural season last year and instantly fell in love with it.
But his passion stretches beyond supporting the team from the grandstands, having connected Phoenix stars Adam Gibson and Dane Pineau with the Australian deaf basketball team for a training session last year.
Ramas taught the pair some Auslan (sign language) and shared his passion for the Phoenix in a wholesome afternoon of fun.
“When I went to games I was really impressed and instantly drawn to the Phoenix because of their strong connection with the community, that’s so important,” he said.
“I feel like I am a part of the team, the club, that’s why I love the club. I feel the same strong connection with the Deaf Aboriginal community too.”
The fundraising money will go straight to Deaf Aboriginal Services, who will distribute accordingly to youth.
