“This is our best ever shot at a title.”
That’s the bold statement South East Melbourne Phoenix part-owner Josh Childress has declared ahead of the upcoming NBL season.
Childress, who has been with the Phoenix for its entire five-year existence, has seen a number of different list combinations.
But he believes there is something special about the roster that will take the court for the season opener on September 28.
“This is a championship quality roster in my eyes,” Childress said.
“We have an MVP candidate from last year (Mitch Creek), a multiple international MVP winner in Will Cummings and the league-leaders in assists (Gary Browne) and rebounds (Alan Williams).
“More importantly, these guys are ultimate team players. Something that is core to the values of our club.
“Add in the recruiting of Craig Moller, and a tougher, more defensive bench, there are some real positive changes that have happened in the off-season.”

Australian basketball legends Brian Goorjian, Andrew Gaze and Lanard Copeland all lauded the recruitment, and retention, of the Phoenix imports.
Puerto Rican guard Gary Browne and US centre Alan Williams have been joined by international multi-MVP winning shooting guard American Will Cummings.
Cummings, who arrives next week, will bring multiple skills to the two guard position, with his passing ability matched by his prowess beyond the arc.
The Phoenix will take on California Baptist on Sunday at the State Basketball Centre, before travelling to the Gold Coast for the NBL Blitz in September.
