South East Melbourne Phoenix will kick off the NBL25 season in Melbourne for the first time with a home Throwdown against Melbourne United.
The Phoenix play host to their cross-town rivals in the traditional season opener slot on the eve of the AFL Grand Final holiday in Victoria, with tip-off slated for 7.30pm.
Early indications, and previous history, suggest that the Thursday, September 26 matchup will be a packed house at John Cain Arena, as the Phoenix continue their tradition of relighting the Fire Pit to kick-start their campaign.
This will be the third time the Phoenix has faced United in a Melbourne opener, with the ledger split at one-game apiece.
Both teams will have featured in the inaugural HoopsFest in Perth the week prior, with this fixture the first of 14 home games the Phoenix will play in Victoria across NBL25.
Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer implored fans to get along to John Cain Arena and be part of history as the Phoenix season takes full-flight.
“For the first time in Phoenix history, we’ll host the traditional season opener slot and get to show off our incredible game-day product both on and off the court,” Greer said.
“We can’t wait for this game, the town will be abuzz on the eve of the AFL Grand Final, and there’ll be no better place to soak up the sporting precinct atmosphere than at our home opener against United alongside 10,000 fans.”
The Throwdown will also be the first chance the hosts will get to showcase their off-season recruits Nathan Sobey, Derrick Walton Jr, Angus Glover, Jordan Hunter and Luke Fennell at home.
Phoenix memberships are currently on sale and guarantee a seat to each of the Phoenix’s home Throwdowns – available at membership.semphoenix.com.au
The remainder of the NBL25 schedule will be released on Friday, June 21.
