The Heartland Crew are the heart and soul of Phoenix game days. A group of dedicated and passionate volunteers, they assist the club to provide an exciting and entertaining experience for all Phoenix fans.
“Without the volunteers, our game nights are not possible. They’re literally the backbone of the Heartland. Just a massive shoutout to everyone who supports us, and gives their time, and all the love, and all the efforts they do behind the scenes that do not always get recognised. We really do appreciate the hard work they do. Without them we wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” said Phoenix star Mitch Creek.

Volunteers come from all walks of life but what they have in common is their love for the Phoenix. The Heartland Crew is built on a sense of community – a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone can feel like they belong.

Throughout the NBL23 season, over 70 volunteers were a part of the Heartland Crew. Three inaugural members, Ai-Dan Huynh, Christine Sayers, and Luke Swan, hit the volunteer milestone of 50 games for the Phoenix. They were honoured with a jersey presentation by team owner Romie Chaudhari, in front of a bustling sold-out State Basketball Centre crowd in January this year.

“We really appreciate all they do. Their time is so valuable, and they choose to spend it helping the Phoenix. I can’t say enough about how special they are. Thank you volunteers for all you do,” said Phoenix import Alan Williams.
Through the Heartland Crew, volunteers can see behind the scenes at the Phoenix, network with staff and gain industry experience. The group are an extension of the Phoenix workforce, engaging in a number of roles across game day. This includes corporate hospitality, event presentation, member services and stadium operations.
“Our Heartland Crew play an integral role for Phoenix game days. Our fans and members won’t be able to enjoy our entertainment-packed match days without the tremendous work and dedication of our passionate volunteers. At the Phoenix, we are able to grow their skills and connections with people in sport and help them with their own endeavours, in whichever career path they take,” said Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer.
The South East Melbourne Phoenix announced that they were an official supporter of the Sport Volunteer Coalition Action Plan at the start of National Volunteer Week. Phoenix is taking action within the basketball community to help improve the experience of our volunteers and to attract and retain more volunteers within our sport and organisation.
