Coming from a basketball family, artist Dixon Patten, from Gunnai, Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, Dhudhuroa, Djab Wurrung country, was humbled to be asked to design the Phoenix’s NBL25 Indigenous jersey.
Patten chose to honour the Orange-Bellied Parrot on the Phoenix’s jersey, which was close to the community of the South East.
“As a storyteller, I wanted to make sure that something embodied the local area,” Patten explained.
“It’s really about honouring the local community, stories, animals and bringing awareness to how we can all play a role in protecting the country.”
The Orange-Bellied Parrot is native to the southern coastline of the southeastern part of Australia to the South Western tip of Tasmania. The bird is one of 27 fighting extinction species in Australia.
The players will wear the Indigenous jersey during their round eight games against the Kings in Sydney on Friday night and then at their home Indigenous game on Sunday against the Cairns Taipans.
Fans can purchase their NBL25 Indigenous jerseys online HERE or at the merchandise stand at gate 7 at Sunday’s home game.
