Winning. That's all Skylar Mays is focused on as he prepares for his first NBL season.
The former NBA guard says individual accolades mean little compared to helping South East Melbourne compete for a championship.
"Winning's first and foremost," Mays said.
"When you're done playing, that's really what you care to be known by. Is he a winner or not?"
Mays believes his biggest strength is making those around him better.
"My best skill is making guys better," he said.
"Being somebody who can be counted on to control the game and somebody that guys love playing with."
Having played more than 100 NBA games, Mays is confident his experience can help the Phoenix in big moments.
"I've been in a bunch of different situations," he said.
"I think that's where I can benefit this team."
After speaking with head coach Josh King, Mays believes the club's ambitions align perfectly with his own.
"We want the championship," he said.
"I know this team has been right there on the cusp and we're looking to get over the hump this year."
For Mays, it's a simple formula.
"You want to be known as a winner... and that's exactly what I want to help build in Melbourne."
